Sustainable IT solutions for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust

Background

Healthcare organisations are under increasing pressure to reduce their environmental impact while maintaining high standards of patient care. East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust wanted to reduce its Scope 3 emissions, generated through the products and services it purchases, while continuing to provide staff with reliable IT equipment. Recycle IT, an ADISA-certified company with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 accreditations, was the ideal partner to help them achieve their sustainability goals.

Challenge

The Trust was looking for a more sustainable approach to IT procurement. It needed access to high-quality laptops and desktops that met performance requirements, supported day-to-day operations, and aligned with its environmental objectives. Cost-effectiveness was also an important consideration.

Solution

Recycle IT partnered with East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust to supply refurbished IT equipment as an alternative to purchasing new devices. Over a six-year period, the Trust procured more than 6,000 refurbished laptops and desktops, helping to reduce both its environmental footprint and IT expenditure. By choosing refurbished technology, the Trust achieved savings of around 35% compared to buying new equipment. Every device was professionally refurbished, thoroughly tested, and supplied to recognised quality standards, giving the trust confidence in both performance and sustainability. As part of Recycle IT's commitment to environmental responsibility, we also plant one tree for every 10 devices sold. Through this initiative, the devices supplied to East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust have contributed to the planting of more than 600 trees, further supporting carbon capture, biodiversity, and wider sustainability goals.

Outcome

The project enabled East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust to support its sustainability goals, reduce Scope 3 emissions associated with IT procurement, and make significant cost savings, all while ensuring staff had access to reliable, high-quality technology. By choosing suppliers like Recycle IT, more organisations can cut their carbon footprint and make a positive impact on the planet.
