We’re delighted to share that Jane Scattergood has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the University of Cumbria.

This appointment is a recognition of Jane’s leadership and long-standing contribution to nursing and public health, both regionally and nationally. In her new role, Jane will support the university’s strategic ambitions, particularly its health and care programmes in Barrow, and will contribute to teaching and research within the Institute of Health.

Jane said: “I am thrilled to join the University of Cumbria as Visiting Professor. I look forward to contributing to the education and development of our health care professionals, and in particular to enhancing our understanding of health equity, inequalities, and health creation. I am eager to join the Institute of Health, to collaborate with educators and with students; particularly at this exciting time for the university as we progress health programmes in Barrow.”

Jane has dedicated more than three decades to improving health outcomes for communities. She is a Queen’s Nurse, an honorary member of the Faculty of Public Health, and an Associate of the Centre for Population Health. She has led major public health programmes including the COVID-19 vaccination rollout in Lancashire and South Cumbria and continues to champion work on vaccine-preventable diseases and tackling health inequalities.

Jane is also the founding chair of ICON, the national charity aimed at preventing abusive head trauma in infants, and has served on several national advisory bodies including the NICE Quality Standards Advisory Committee.

Throughout her career, Jane has maintained strong ties to South Cumbria, having worked clinically in Barrow-in-Furness and supported families in community and acute settings. She also continues to volunteer in roles that uphold ethics, integrity and public accountability, including chairing the Community Scrutiny Committees for Cumbria Constabulary and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service.

We are incredibly proud of Jane and know that her insight, experience, and leadership will be a huge asset to students and staff at the University of Cumbria.
