Update on Coniston Village Surgery – July 2025

Date posted: 17th July 2025

To ensure the continuity of general medical services at Coniston Village Surgery, Morecambe Bay Primary Care Collaborative will act as a caretaker and manage the practice from 1 August 2025 for a period of six months.

This is because Drs Katharina Frey and Ahmed Abbas have decided to hand back their contract to run the practice following Dr Frey’s retirement.

The caretaker arrangement will allow NHS Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), the organisation that plans and manages NHS health services in the region, to carry out a procurement exercise in order to identify a long-term provider for the service.

From 1 August 2025, you can expect:

  • Opening hours of 8am to 6.30pm
  • Full-time GP and administrative teams on-site, however it cannot be guaranteed that you will see the same GP every time you visit the practice
  • Additional clinical support from different types of clinicians, such as practice nurses as required based on the needs of patients

Dispensary

Unfortunately, attempts to recruit staff to manage the medicines dispensary within the practice have been unsuccessful. This means that, from 1 August, this service will cease.

Online pharmacies are available and can deliver medicines to your door, and most of the pharmacies in towns closest to Coniston will also offer a delivery service. If you need support accessing your prescriptions, please speak to reception staff.

We will continue to provide updates on the management of the practice over the coming weeks and months as appropriate. We will post updates on our website at www.conistonvillagesurgery.co.uk and on our Facebook page, as well as posting updates to our practice noticeboard and throughout the village to the best of our ability.

We will also liaise closely with the patient participation group (PPG) which has been instrumental in helping us to communicate with patients throughout this process.
