Information for the public on industrial action

Date posted: 15th December 2022

Trade unions representing NHS staff have advised the Secretary of State that they are in dispute over the 2022/23 pay award.

A number of the unions are balloting or have signalled their intention to ballot their NHS members to take part in industrial action. Currently, there is industrial action planned to take place over four days (by the Royal College of Nursing at locations across Cheshire and Merseyside on 15 and 20 December, and by ambulance services across the North West on 21 December).

We want to see a resolution as soon as possible to the strikes, but ultimately pay is a matter for the Government and the trade unions. Unlike workers in other sectors during a strike, to make sure patients are safe some health union members will continue their work in line with an agreement between employers and unions. Derogation discussions will be taking place nationally and locally.
